Sunday May 24th, 2026 – Ephesians 3:14-19
What should we pray for? Paul lays out his prayer for the church at Ephesus, and it is very stunning. He prays that God would fill them with His fullness. How can mere humans, especially fallen, sinful humans have the fullness of the infinite and holy God? The answer has already been given by Paul. God intends to unite all things in Christ (1:10) as demonstrated by the life God gives to dead sinners by grace through faith in and with Christ (2:1-10). And then there is the work that God does in tearing down the middle wall of separation thus making one new humanity from both Jews and Gentiles, the mystery once hidden but now revealed to God’s holy prophets and apostles. Which is why Paul prays this boldly audacious prayer for the fullness of God. God is not content to merely grant life and unity among men. Having rooted and grounded His new humanity in His love He determines to give them strength in their inner-being so that Christ may dwell in their hearts as they continue to experience the knowledge of the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge. God is making His people able to receive the fullness of God by changing them from the inside out. Praise be to God for His incredible desire to share Himself and His great love with us!
